As a science fiction fan, and a fan of Star Trek in general, I was a little leery when I first heard about Galaxy Quest, But After watching it, I must agree with the prevailing public sentiment, this is one of the greatest Star Trek Films ever made, and the Protector is one of my favorite scifi ships, so it only made sense to pay tribute to that classic, with my own 3d model.
After locating a proper piece of reference material, I began by blocking out the shape of the Protector, breaking down the ship into several components, starting with the main hull of the ship. Then with the look of the main hull done, I began to block out the engine pods, wings, and other pieces of the ship as separate objects, for future ease of unwraping.
For this project I chose Blender as my modeling software of choice. I’m still learning the ins and outs of the program as I go, but I’ve gotten a handle on the basic functions of the program as I worked on this project. Once the basic shape of the ship was mostly complete, I threw on some simple test textures, to give me a rough Idea of where I was in the project, and I must say, I’m very happy with the direction of the project so far.
Once I finish building out the last few details for the main hull, I’m going to be unwraping the model for export into substance painter.
